The Right Way to Clean a Baseball Cap (No Shrink, No Creases)
Posted by Katy on Aug 11th 2025
Why most caps get ruined in the wash
Baseball caps are built from cotton or cotton-poly blends with a shaped brim. Agitation, heat, and twisting can warp that shape and cause shrinking or sweat-stain rings. The good news: with a little prep (and the right holder) you can get a clean cap that still looks crisp.
Three safe ways to clean a baseball cap
Method 1: Cap cage + washing machine (our favorite)
- Pre-treat sweat bands with a gentle stain remover or a mix of mild detergent + water. Brush lightly with a soft toothbrush.
- Place the cap in a rigid cap holder so the crown and brim keep their shape.
- Use cold water, delicate cycle, and a small amount of detergent. Avoid bleach.
- Air dry only. Shape the brim as it dries. No dryer, no high heat.

Method 2: Hand-wash (best for vintage or wool)
- Fill a sink with cool water + a teaspoon of gentle detergent.
- Submerge, swirl for 10 minutes, spot-clean the sweat band.
- Rinse cool, press water out with a towel (don’t wring), then air dry on a rounded object.
Method 3: Quick refresh (no full wash)
- Mix 1 cup water + 1 tbsp white vinegar. Lightly mist the sweat band and inner crown.
- Blot with a clean towel and air dry. Great for in-between deep cleans.
What not to do
- No hot water or dryers. Heat shrinks and warps.
- No bleach on colored caps. It can yellow stitching.
- Dishwasher? It’s hit-or-miss because the water can get hot. If you try it, use the top rack, cold/air-dry, and still use a cap holder.
Stain cheatsheet
- Sweat rings: paste of baking soda + water, brush gently, then rinse.
- Grass: dab rubbing alcohol on a cloth, then wash.
- Makeup/sunscreen: a drop of dish soap on a damp cloth, blot, then rinse.
Keep it fresh longer
- Let caps dry fully between wears.
- Use a deodorizing spray on the sweat band after hot days.
- Store on a hook or in a cage so the crown doesn’t collapse.
